Matthew Scott Newlon, 35, of Belpre, Ohio passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his most cherished friends and family on Friday, July 31st, 2026. He was a beloved friend, son, grandson, coworker, cat dad, and devoted husband who will be missed by many.
Matt was born on July 18th, 1991, in Marietta, Ohio. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 2009 and from Marshall University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2013. In high school, he played basketball and football, then continued his athletic career playing football for the Thundering Herd. Upon graduation, he went on to begin his career as a Civil Engineer at Burgess and Niple in Parkersburg, West Virginia where he worked for 13 years. Matt became a well-rounded engineer, working as a bridge inspector, water/wastewater designer, and project manager, and became a licensed Professional Engineer in 2017. It was at B&N where he met his wife, Andrea, as well as several lifelong friends.
Matt loved all things Coca-cola, he loved cars (especially Mustangs), disc golf, watching sports, heavy rock music, a good “dad” joke, his Ford belt, Johnny Cash’s “The Ring of Fire”, and of course his three cats, but above all, he loved to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was a Pittsburgh sports fan except for when it came to baseball where he grew up to love the Cincinnati Reds. Matt was the type of guy that you would want on your trivia team and was always prepared to share his wealth of knowledge or sing a song lyric incorrectly. Matt loved deeply, and if you knew him, you knew he was one of a kind.
Matt is preceded in death by his uncle Kevin and great uncle Larry (Mary), both of whom he traveled with to attend multiple runnings of the Indy 500. In addition, he is preceded in death by his grandparents Charles and Mary Lou Burchard. Matt is survived by his wife Andrea Newlon and their three cats Nelly, Brutus, and Philo, his grandparents Harley and Connie Cox, his parents Mike and Tracy Newlon, and his sister Cinda Rinard (Jordan). Matt is also survived by his in-laws Mark and Lea Ann Papesh, brother-in-law Matthew Papesh (Becca), and most special “roomie” Diana Carson. In addition, he was loved so greatly by his very best friends Mike and Kristina Blake and his godson Hayden, Logan Hughes (Natalie), and Justus and Courtney Robinson.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, with a time and event space to be announced. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that you bring a photo or memory to share at the celebration.
