Steven Lynn Metheny, 77, of Parkersburg passed away October 4, 2026 at OSU Wexner Medical Center. He was born January 12, 1949, a son to the late Clair E. and Sadie M. Metheny (Coldiron).

Steve lived a life marked by faith, service, and a deep love for his family. He faithfully served God alongside his wife, Laraine, and was a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He especially enjoyed attending Men’s Camp at Camp Cowen, where he treasured the fellowship and time spent growing in his faith.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States military, retiring after a distinguished career that included service during both the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. His commitment to serving others continued in his civilian life as supervisor for the City of Elkins Water Department.

In his free time, Steve loved being outdoors. He found great enjoyment working in his garden and had a passion for panning and prospecting for gold. Whether tending to something he had planted or searching for a little glimmer of gold, he appreciated life’s simple pleasures.

Perhaps one of Steve’s most treasured roles was being Dad to Megan and “Papaw” to his grandchildren, Miciah and Kyra. He was an amazing Father and Papaw who took great pride in them and could always be counted on to be in the stands or in the audience at their games, activities, and special events. His presence was a constant reminder of just how deeply they were loved.

Steve leaves behind a legacy of faithful service—to his God, his country, his community, and, most importantly, his family. His life was a beautiful example of devotion, dependability, and love, and the impact he made on those who knew and loved him will remain for generations.

Surviving Steve is his wife of 45 years, Laraine Metheny; daughter Megan Jones (Jason); grandchildren Miciah Jones (Kaylee) and Kyra Jones; brother Carmen Metheny (Jean); in-laws Corlyess Metheny, and John and Connie Eddy; nephews Keith and Jeremy; nieces Samantha and Lisa, and several great-nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Steve is preceded in death by his brother Bill Metheny.

As per the family’s wishes, Steve’s remains will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 11, at 11am, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Parkersburg. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 the same day.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church Benevolence Fund and Necessity Closet.
