James Anthony Dukas, of Belpre, known to many as Jim, passed away in Marietta, Ohio on August 22, 2026, after a brief illness, at the age of 100. He was born on May 3, 1926, in Hazelton, PA and he lived a life marked by faithful service, steady devotion, and a deep commitment to his family, his church, and his community.
Jim is the son of the late Tony and Esther (Psaris) Dukas. Jim was married to Sally (Konokas) Dukas for 70 years. Their daughters are Kathy (Tom) Fankhauser, of Belpre and Denise (Steve) Highland of Belpre. He has five grandchildren, James (Tina) Kohler, of Germany, Sarah (Matt) Kindzerske, of East Bridgewater, MA, Christopher (Melanie) Kohler, of Parkersburg, WV, Amy (Dan) Gendron, of North Indio, CA, and Jennifer (Josey) VanMeter, of Belpre. And nine great-grandchildren.
Jim was a Christian man whose life reflected the values he held dear. He was guided by faith, duty, and a sincere concern for others, and he carried himself with quiet strength and humility. Those who knew him remember a man who was dependable, respectful, and generous with his time and talents. He believed in doing what was right, serving where he was needed, and offering encouragement to those around him.
A proud Eagle Scout, Jim developed early in life the discipline, responsibility, and integrity that would shape his many years of service. He answered the call of duty by serving in the United States Navy during World War II, an experience that stood as a testament to his courage and patriotism. After his military service, he pursued higher education with determination and earned a master’s degree from Ohio University. He also studied at Eastern Illinois, preparing himself for a lifelong career in education and public service.
Jim devoted much of his professional life to teaching secondary education and serving in vocational education administration. He believed in the value of education and in helping young people prepare for meaningful work and responsible citizenship. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he encouraged others through example, patience, and practical wisdom. He understood that education was not only about knowledge, but also about character, perseverance, and hope for the future.
His commitment to community was evident in the many organizations and causes he supported throughout his life. He was active in community groups in Belpre and was known for his steady involvement and willingness to help. He was instrumental in the founding of St. James Greek Orthodox Church in Belpre, a work that reflected both his faith and his desire to build something lasting for future generations. His role in that effort remains a meaningful part of his legacy and a witness to his devotion to God and to his community.
Jim was also involved in the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Belpre Shrine, and York Rite, where he found fellowship and continued opportunities to serve. His membership in these organizations reflected his appreciation for brotherhood, service, and tradition. He also served as an Auxiliary Deputy for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, demonstrating once again his respect for law, order, and the well-being of his neighbors. In every role he held, he carried himself with dignity and a sense of purpose.
Among his interests, Jim enjoyed amateur radio, a pursuit that reflected both his curiosity and his enjoyment of connecting with others. He valued the friendships and conversations that came through his many interests, and he remained active in community groups in Belpre throughout his life. He was a man who stayed engaged with the world around him, always ready to contribute, listen, and lend support.
Jim’s long life was a blessing to those who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, education, and community leadership. He will be remembered for his steadfast character, his devotion to Christian values, and his many contributions to the lives of others. His example will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Funeral will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, at St. James Greek Orthodox Church. The family will receive visitors from noon until the time of the funeral at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg, WV, with military honors by Marietta Legion and VFW and Masonic Rites by Belpre Lodge 609.
