Durwood “Sonny” Foster Bennett Jr., 68, of Belpre, passed away January 15, 2026 at his residence.
He was born September 25, 1957. He was a graduate of Belpre High School and Washington State Career Center, where he enjoyed horticulture and received his degree. He went on to Mt. Vernon Nazarene College before joining the Army. After the Army, he married the love of his life, Judith Diane Myers on Dec. 31, 1981. He joined the Navy serving on the USS Sylvania and the USS Portland, traveling all over the world. Sonny received many commendations and awards while serving his country.
Sonny and Judy became proud parents of David Kelley Bennett, while stationed in Norfolk, VA. After retiring from the Navy, Sonny worked for the Army National Guard and then the Army Corp f Engineers as a Lockman. He and Judy were thrilled to welcome their grandson Ian Daniel Bennett.
Sonny was preceded in death by his wife Judy and his parents Durwood F. Bennett Sr. and Ruth Bennett.
He is survived by his son David Kelley Bennett, grandson Ian Daniel Bennett, sisters Virginia Caldwell, Katherine Dye and Nancey Leftwich, a brother David E. Bennett, aunt Wanda Hart and aunt Bev and Uncle Charles Lynch and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 26, 2026, 1:00 pm, at the Leavitt Funeral Home Belpre, with Father John Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery Parkersburg.
