Dirk Anthony Leftwich Sr. embarked on his final adventure on December 2, 2025, at the age of 61, leaving a legacy of laughter, wisdom, and an unwavering passion for life. Born on May 21, 1964, in Charleston, WV, Dirk’s journey came full circle as he passed away peacefully in his sleep in his own home in Belpre, OH. after bravely facing health challenges related to diabetes for many years.
Dirk’s story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved. He shared an unbreakable bond with his wife, Nancey, and together they navigated the rollercoaster of life with grace and humor. His children—Rachael Howard (and husband Chris), Gilles Leduc, Desirae Leftwich (and husband Chris), Regina Leftwich (Michael), and Dirk Leftwich Jr. (and wife Kati)—were the apples of his eye, and his grandchildren—Delilah, Claire, Benjamin, Ryleigh, Cameron, Korbin, Maverick, Braelyn, Amiyah, Emeri, Dirk III, and Millie—were the twinkling stars in his vast sky. He is also survived by 3 brothers and a sister.
Dirk served with distinction as a Marine Corps veteran, embodying the Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business, his dedication to service continued as he became a beloved coach and referee in the surrounding communities, guiding young athletes in football, basketball, baseball, and softball with a firm yet gentle hand. His commitment to youth football in particular, shaped a legacy of teamwork, confidence, and fun that will be felt for years to come.
A Christian, Dirk’s faith was as integral to him as his sense of humor. He found joy in the simple things—like the wag of a tail from one of his many dogs over the years, especially Nakita, who was in a league of her own. Dirk loved the thrill of Formula 1 racing, the excitement of sports, and most of all, cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events and activities, where he was their biggest fan.
Dirk’s magnetic personality could light up any room, much like the comedian he enjoyed, Kevin Hart, who once said, “The two things we share in this world are laughter and pain. We’ve all got problems. The levels of those problems vary but we’ve all got problems. When you can take things that are painful and make them funny, that’s a gift.” Dirk indeed never lost his spark, nor his ability to find opportunities for laughter.
Those who knew Dirk would say he was a passionate soul, a loving heart, and a wise spirit. He could weave a story that would leave you in stitches, offer advice that could change your path, and provide a shoulder that felt like home. Dirk’s laughter was infectious, his love was boundless, and his wisdom, eternal.
As we bid farewell to Dirk Anthony Leftwich Sr., we remember not just the man, but the legend—the coach who knew your potential before you did, the referee who called it like he saw it, and the family man who knew that every day was a gift. Dirk, you have left an indelible mark on our hearts, and while the grandstands of life may be a little quieter without your cheers, we know you’re up there, getting the best view of the game, with Nakita by your side. We will always remember your words, “if you’re going to be a bear, be a grizzly.” Rest easy, coach, you’ve earned it.
